Made in Abyss
The world has been picked clean, mapped out, and conquered. Every corner of the globe has yielded its secrets to humanity, save for one terrifying, magnificent exception: the Abyss. A colossal, bottomless pit stretching deep into the earth, the Abyss is a labyrinth filled with bizarre creatures, priceless ancient relics, and a deadly curse that inflicts physical torment on anyone trying to ascend back to the surface. Those brave enough to plunge into its depths are known as Cave Raiders.
Our story follows Riko, a spunky orphan girl living in the town of Orth on the edge of the pit. Riko dreams of becoming a legendary White Whistle Cave Raider, just like her legendary, missing mother. Her life takes a massive turn during an exploration of the upper layers when she rescues Reg, a mysterious boy who turns out to be an incredibly advanced robot with no memory of his past. Together, they make the daring, heart-pounding decision to descend to the absolute bottom of the pit—a one-way journey into a gorgeous yet brutally unforgiving underworld.
Do not let the whimsical, cute art style fool you. Made in Abyss is an absolute powerhouse of world-building, masterfully blending high-stakes sci-fi adventure with gripping psychological drama and pitch-black survival horror. There is a reason this incredible series was nominated for the prestigious 11th Manga Taishou Awards in 2018. As a special treat for fans, this release also includes the rare, 5-chapter side story "How Are You? Somewhere," adding even more emotional depth to the overarching narrative.
If you are a fan of vast, unpredictable worlds where danger lurks around every corner and the lore runs incredibly deep, you should check out the deadly, vertical challenges of Tower of God, or experience the legendary, unforgiving expeditions found in Hunter x Hunter.
