Sankarea delivers a uniquely twisted blend of romantic comedy, supernatural intrigue, and dark horror. High school student Chihiro Furuya has an unyielding obsession with zombies, preferring undead heroines over living girls. When his beloved cat Babu dies, Chihiro attempts the impossible by using an ancient manuscript to synthesize a resurrection potion inside an abandoned building. During his late-night experiments, he crosses paths with Rea Sanka, a wealthy and beautiful heiress who secretly seeks an escape from her suffocating, abusive household.

Desperate to flee her miserable existence, Rea sneaks a sip of Chihiro's experimental elixir, believing it to be a lethal poison. Shortly after, a tragic cliffside accident ends her life—only for the potion to revive her as a genuine zombie. Fulfilling Chihiro's strange fantasy in the most unexpected way, Rea moves in with him to experience true freedom. However, maintaining a zombie girlfriend comes with bizarre challenges, from slowing down physical deterioration with hydrangea leaves to managing romantic feelings in the face of inevitable decay.
